manly but modern

I never thought in a million gazillion bajillion years that I would live in a cypress hunting lodge in the middle of the woods with a permanent deer feeder posted up in my front yard.

Besides having to drive 30 miles for toothpaste and constantly getting in a fight with that stupid master lock on the gate every morning, the “cypress lodge” look just really didn’t match my decorating taste. And even though I begged Luke to let me throw in my collection of Anthropologie patterns and prints all over the house–he was insistent on sticking with the hunter’s lodge theme. Barf.

So farewell, Moroccan Ikat print sheets. I will miss sleeping with you.

Goodbye sweet knobs and pulls that I would buy for no other reason than to leave in a closet in hopes of one day refinishing a piece of my grandmother’s furniture. You will be missed.

Ta Ta to the Japanese-inspired pillow I’ve been coveting online for over six months. I will never have the great pleasure of buying you.

AND HELLO DEER.

The only reason you get to hang on my wall is because I appreciate that you have a modern appeal and the alternative was this…

So my new adventure begins with the challenge of decorating my home with men, hunting, guns and the great outdoors in mind! Manly but modern. I’m thinking “rustic luxury”….??

And lucky for me I found Bradley Gordon from Clarksdale.

I love the way his art depicts good ole Delta hunting in a really modern way.

I bought these two (above) to hang in my downstairs bathroom.

But have you ever seen anyone make a hog look so cool?

And if you have a blonde lab–c’mon now. You HAVE to buy this.

The Gordon Gallery is located in downtown Clarksdale. Open Tuesday-Saturday 11am-5pm. The owner and artist is Bradley Gordon, a super nice guy. Go check him out!

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

I love this band! My friend Kayla introduced them to me last summer (or maybe the summer before, I swear time just flies) and I have been loving them ever since.

They are playing in OXFORD on May 21st at The Lyric and you betta believe I will be there dancin’ and prancin’ all over the place.

You should come too!!!!

One of my favorite songs that I never get sick of is Apologies. Have a listen here: http://www.gracepotter.com/music/this-is-somewhere/

That is a song from their old album–but surf around and listen to the new stuff too.

You will love love love.

Flood Fashion

What’s a gal to do during the biggest flood of the century?

Buy the cutest rain boots in the world, of course!!!!!!

These are Regina Regis Rain Boots by Italian designer Stefano Pirovano. I needed something to cheer me up–and thanks to my favorite fashionista, Ms. Jill Sanchez, I have found the perfect fix for my Mississippi River blues.

Now–if I can just figure out where to buy them online….?

great state cookies

I swear, if you would have told me three years ago–as I was gallivanting around Houston, Texas in a pencil skirt and pumps looking for a new happy hour hot-spot and the perfect spicy tuna roll–that one day I would fall madly in love with Farmer Joe and move to the corner of Dirt Road and Cow Manure Ave, I would have told you to put the pipe down.

If you also would have told me that I would jump up and down over the thought of getting to bake oatmeal raisin cookies in the shape of the great state of Mississippi–I wouldn’t be surprised at all because I’d do almost anything for an oatmeal raisin cookie.

This summer, praying to the levee gods that the entire town of Benoit isn’t flooded and my lake house hasn’t washed away, I plan on baking lots of  homemade “great state cookies” for all the friends and family that will be shuffling in and out of our cabin on the weekends.

There’s just one problem. I’ve never made homemade cookies before. In fact, I just recently learned how to make the store-bought ones without burning them.

Is anyone else always two minutes late??

Two minutes late=very crunchy cookies. Very crunchy and very black on the bottom.

Would anyone like to help a city girl out and share a homemade cookie recipe with me? Doesn’t have to be an oatmeal raisin one, but lord knows they are my favorite! Please email to kallie@hellodelta.net

I’ll try them out and post my favorites for everyone to try!

And if you want to make “great state cookies” with me, you can buy your own cookie cutter HERE!

Mississippi Pottery

There are so many reasons why I love the Delta.

Eating a $60 dollar steak in a run-down gas station, being 10 minutes late to work because a combine was blocking the road, always having a sunset view, I could go on and on and on…

But one thing I’ve become obsessed with this year is art. Not just paintings  and photographs, but pottery too! Mississippi has the most amazing pottery collections. They are all so different which is why I love them!

There is McCarty’s pottery which I feel is the “classic” choice for everyone. I’ve never been to one party where I didn’t see a piece of McCarty’s somewhere in the house. Hell the other day I threw something away in a McCarty’s trashcan! No joke…

Spirit Song pottery! Yikes this is so tempting. I can’t even stare at the picture and write about it because it makes me want to buy buy buy. I love how funky the coffee mugs are especially…

This is Good Earth pottery and I think it is fabbbbuloso–not talking about the all purpose cleaner that my mother secretly sniffs in the bathroom. JK…but seriously she is obsessed with that stuff. Click on the picture to get a better view of the pattern!

Aww but then you have Three E Designs and they are just the cutest. Look at that cake holder platter thingy on the left?

Still working on my kitchen lingo…

Which brand of pottery is your favorite? I don’t think I’m gonna stick to one. Instead I’ll have a few pieces from them all :)
